New in-vehicle combustion analysis technique for enhancing the development phase of transient engine operation

The paper describes innovative solutions for delivering valuable combustion information for the entire engine operation range including pre-start phenomena. The first part deals with the role of the calibration engineers and how to optimize their daily tasks, mainly drivability, emissions and fuel consumption reduction. One important point is the easy installation and set-up of combustion analysis instrumentation in a prototype vehicle thanks to innovative methods. Thanks to a time basis, another important point concerns the synchronization of all parameters measured in a vehicle to ensure the best usability of the results. The second part focuses on case studies inspired by existing calibration examples. Three different aspects will be presented: knock analysis, start calibration and engine torque validation. They have a big influence on emissions and consumption. Compared with established combustion analysis systems the suggested new solutions benefit engine development projects by lower investment cost and by saving time spent for vehicle instrumentation and project management.
