Vehicles, both civilian and military, have mission specific designs which lead to gross vehicle weights ranging from 1000s of pounds to near 70 tons. The steel used to construct these vehicles ranges from 0.020" thick to 4.00". Many strength grades, shapes, and microstructures are considered, each with a specific functionality required. From the passenger vehicle to the Abrams Tank, body-in-white hull structures are made of sheet steel, hollow tubes, and thicker frame sections. These range in ultimate strength from mild steels below 300MPa used for less demanding areas to 2000MPa for resistance to ballistic penetration. As a multi-grade material vehicle, mild steel welds easily due to low carbon equivalence but is often only deployed in auxiliary uses like brackets, tubing, skins and the like. A 2000 MPa steel sheet, just like similar strength 2000MPa Ultra Hard Armor has a higher strength to weight ratio but has been "strongly discouraged" from being welded by the Army with much experience in this area. Tubing offers vehicular hull stiffness for light duty frames. No matter the steel grade or shape, all steel vehicles share one trait. They are all made of a welded structure.
