This paper aims to report the results of some investigations carried out in Iranian steel industries by refractory research division of Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST) to reuse the spent magnesia-graphite refractory bricks in last 7 years. Economical aspects of recycling and environmental effects of spent refractories landfills were studied in this project on the basis of crushing the spent bricks, chemical analysis and developing new refractories for local applications. It was clarified that about 70% of refractory wastes could be recycled successfully and the impacts of environmental protection was to be very significant. This paper reviews refractory material recycling experiences in Iran were done from 1996 to 2008 in cement, copper and specially steel industries. Also this paper explains the slag corrosion behavior and microstructural properties of magnesia bricks containing recycled aggregates in comparison to the commercial refractory bricks used in the steel industries.
