Highway culverts and drainage structures have the peculiarity of being characterized as both buried pipes in small diameters with no access or worker entry and larger ones with the possibility of manual inspection and repair/renewal. As such, asset management procedures for culverts are a complex issue. Trenchless technologies are not disruptive to transportation systems and provide safer construction operations for both workers and the general public and are ideal solutions for culvert renewal projects. If they are used in the appropriate application, they provide extended design life to existing culverts and drainage structures that may double or triple the original design life of these assets. However, each trenchless method has its own capabilities and limitations, and should be selected based upon existing conditions in order to be effective. This paper presents an overview of ASCE Manual of Practice (MOP) No. 120 entitled "Trenchless Renewal of Culverts and Storm Sewers." The objective of this MOP is to describe technologies used by engineers and transportation professionals in renewing culverts and drainage structures under roads, railroads, airport runways, streets and similar structures.
