Precise Calculation of Piezoelectric Switching Techniques for Vibration Damping

Piezoelectric shunt damping is new technique to damp mechanical vibrations of structures. Because of thepiezoelectric effect, vibration energy is converted into electrical energy. In the attached network some part ofthe energy is dissipated. Switching shunts offer the possibility to adapt to varying excitation frequencies. Inthis paper, the damping performance of different switching techniques are calculated considering all importantnetwork parameters and non-idealities in the switching boards. Measurements on a clamped beam are performedto validate the results, and the switching techniques are applied to a squealing disc brake. It is shown that dueto the piezoelectric shunt damping the sound pressure level can be reduced considerably.
