Legacy mechanical and analog governors have a proven track record of high reliability and availability; However they may lack some of the ancillary functionality of modern digital control systems. Through the addition of small "add-on" Programmable Logic Controllers, many advanced features can be integrated into existing governor systems, thereby avoiding the sizable costs and complexities associated with a complete digital conversion. This paper highlights a variety of novel governor additions: digital gate switches, digital speed switches, digital brake control, digital pump control, the 3D cam blade controller, and the digital governor SCADA interface.
