The control of photovoltaic (PV) power systems is of major importance in distribution power systems which are highly penetrated with PV. A simple closed loop control approach taking advantage of existing assets in the grid infrastructure is presented in this paper. This approach principally consists of the widely spread ripple control system, some distributed real time low voltage measurements and a computer located in the grid operation centre which hosts the control algorithms. The performance of such a system is discussed in this paper. First experiences and findings of an implementation called "Smart Grid Eich" in Switzerland are presented. It is shown that the performance of this simple system is close to the performance of a fast control system using broad band communication.
