The Experience of the Center for Mineral Technology (CETEM) in Producing Certified Reference Materials from Mineral Samples

Over the last twenty years CETEM has been involved in the preparation of ores, rocks, concentrates and related materials that are certified for chemical composition for use in analytical laboratories associated with mining, metallurgy and earth sciences. In order to improve the quality of the reference materials provided, CETEM has built up a specific laboratory designed for material preparation and implemented a quality system to fulfill the management and technical requirements laid down in ISO Guides 34 and 35. This article describes the procedures for material preparation and the collaborative approach involving an interlaboratory measurement program required for the certification of matrix reference materials. Lastly, a summary of the certified reference materials produced is presented.
