Thermal insulation is a key factor influencing the performance of a high temperature fuel cell. Efficiency and performance can be improved dramatically and heat loss can be reduced to a minimum. Microporous insulation is recognised as the best insulation material for high temperature applications in normal atmosphere as well as in vacuum and in gasses other than air. Microtherm~R microporous insulation meets almost all of the requirements of fuel cell manufacturers due to its composition and nanoscale structure. For example, Microtherm~R has an exceptionally low thermal conductivity coupled with thermal stability up to 1000 °C (in a special grade also up to 1200°C) and is essentially impervious to thermal shock. Many applications require as little as 1/4 of the thickness of conventional high temperature insulation materials with less heat loss.
