The present paper gives an overview of the actual research and development efforts of the FlameSOFC project, which is co-financed by the European Commission as an integrated project within the 6th framework programme. The overall objective of FlameSOFC is the development of an advanced SOFC-based μCHP system. The partners involved in the FlameSOFC project bring together a sufficient number of important European actors on the scientific, research and industry level including SMEs and industrial partners from the heating sector (Fagor Electrodomesticos, MTS group). A 1st Phase Prototype was designed and constructed by the international project consortium. The prototype combines a robust thermal partial oxidation reactor and a versatile afterburner based on porous burner technology as main innovations. The prototype was integrated in the EBZ fuel cell laboratory and successfully operated in a stack dummy mode with a modulation of 1:4 and with a 500 Wel. preliminary SOFC stack.
