The rapid automated design methodology for LLC resonant converters using a genetic algorithm is described. A suitable cost function is developed by restricting the operation of the converter to frequencies below the load independent point. By virtue of employing a binary coded genetic algorithm, preferred values are returned for the tank capacitor and integer transformer turns ratio as well as values for the two resonant inductors. A describing function based equivalent circuit model is utilised to rapidly evaluate the multiple candidate converters. Investigations have shown the GA to return accurate designs within 10 seconds.
