This paper describes a single-chip single phase brushless DC motor driver with current control, a con-trol/diagnostic interface and sensorless commutation. With integrated H-bridge drivers that drive cur-rents up to 1.2 A, the application for the device is targeted, but not limited to fans with a maximum power of 25 Watt. Device behavior for normal and erratic operating conditions is programmable in a one-time-programmable memory (OTP). The sensorless commutation technique is insensitive to motor design and finds the optimum commutation point for efficient motor drive.
