Pitch-based carbon foams as a novel porous multi-functional carbon material, exhibit thermal conductivities along the ligaments of up to 1500 W/m.K with bulk thermal conductivities of 5~250 W/m.K. This high thermal conductivity and porosity of up to 90% allows the possibility of infiltrating the foam with a relatively large volume of phase-change material of thermal management systems applications, such as heat exchangers, space radiators, and thermal protection systems.
