The ultrafine graphite powders are widely used in a number of areas such as functional paint, and battery, because of its thermal stability, corrosion resistance, impact resistance, acid resistance, and high heat conduction. In general, the ultrafine graphite powders can be prepared from natural graphite, but its production from lost cost coal such as anthracite is also very attractive and has been explored in terms of coal property and process conditions. Taixi anthracite is a kind of superior coal with low content of ash, sulfur and phosphorus, of which the potential needs to be explored with an aim of producing ultrafine graphite powders. The graphitization of anthracite at high temperatures has been studied by many researchers [1-4]. To further improve the process, the catalytic graphitization of various coals is also conducted with some transitional metals as catalysts [5-8]. In this paper, the catalytic graphitization of Taixi coal is investigated by using some transitional metals or non-metals as catalysts.
