Most Li-ion batteries use carbonate-based electrolytes. In such batteries, the organic electrolyte is decomposed during the intercalation of Li-ions into the graphite anode, resulting in the formation of a solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film on the graphite anode surface. The SEI film plays a significant role in determining the performance of the battery, given that they passivize the electrode surface against further reactions while acting as the Li-ion conductor and electrical insulator. Hence, SEI films are considered indispensable for the intercalation of Li-ions into the graphite anode.
