As a new member of carbon nanomaterials, graphene has been known as a sharply rising star after the discovery of fullerene and carbon nanotubes. Graphene has attracted enormous attention from both scientific and industrial research communities due to its unique single-atom layer structure, as well as the extraordinary physical and chemical properties. Recently, researchers have explored several methods to synthesize graphene sheets, among them, chemical reduction from graphite oxide is regarded as one of the most promising approaches because of its scalablity and easiness in production. However, many harmful reductants such as hydrazine and dimethylhydrazine with high toxicity have been employed in the chemical route. Therefore, for the purpose of practical application, it is urgent for chemists to develop effective and clean methods to produce high quality graphene in large scale. Herein we present an eco-friendly method to synthesize graphene by sodium citrate under mild condition. This novel approach may path the way forward industrial production and wildly application of graphene.
