The first appearance of cocrystals can be traced back to the 60s of last century. But only within the last decade have cocrystals found their place in pharmaceuticals, primarily due to their ability to improve drug solubility and dissolution rate and increase the stability of drugs without compromising the structural integrity of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and thus, possibly, the bioactivity. Besides these, the development of cocrystal can help us to get the independent intellectual property rights. This article will introduce us the definition of cocrystals, talk about how to choice the guest molecule of cocrystals, and present the influence of pharmaceutical cocrystal on the melting point, solubility and the mechanical properties.
