@@Cataract refers to the opacification of the lens of the eye. Apoptosis of lens epithelial cells is implicated in the pathogenesis of several types of cataract formation[1]. Various biochemical changes associated with selenite-induced cataract have been reported. Among them, superoxide dismutase was found to act as defense enzymes to the oxidative stress in cataract[2, 3], GSH is one kind of small peptides for scavenging O2 -, H2O2 and LOOH and malondialdehyde is produced from lipid peroxidation. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) functions as a well-known electron carrier and efficiently protects membrane phospholipids and mitochondrial DNA from free-radical-induced oxidative damage[4-6]. In view of the antioxidant properties of CoQ10, and since oxidative stress has been implicated in cataractogenesis, N-trimethyl chitosan chloride (TMC)-coated liposomes containing CoQ10 were investigated to exhibit anticataractogenic potential for the first time. Firstly, TMC (TMC 601 and TMC 602 with degree of quaternization about 65 %, MW 100KDa and 450KDa, respectively) were employed for reducing rapid precorneal drug loss[7, 8]. Secondly, the protective effects of CoQ10 in vesicles composed of TMC against cataract were investigated both in vitro and in vivo.
