Clay particles contribute to the stabilization of the "rag layer" in the separation of emulsions of naphtha diluted Athabasca bitumen. We have previously shown how emulsion separation can be assisted by addition of sodium silicate and pH control. It is thought that the clay wettability is altered by reversing the charge on the positive edges of clays as to reduce the adsorption of naphthenic acids. Here we characterize the electrical charge on the surface of kaolinite by zeta potential measurements with electrolyte addition and interpretation models. Sodium silicate contributes the most to changing the zeta potential per molar unit of addition. Also, with addition of sodium silicate, the zeta potential is more negative for the same pH than if sodium hydroxide is added.
