Forecasting and demonstrating the long-term isolation performance of engineered geologic CO_2 storage requires a technology portfolio that explicitly integrates state-of-the-art site characterization, experimental, modeling, monitoring, and verification components. In this paper, I review the fundamental elements of isolation performance; outline the technical requirements of advanced site characterization, modeling, and monitoring methods; discuss key challenges to identifying screening criteria that permit optimal source/sink matching and quantifying the uncertainties that surround modeling and monitoring efforts; and, finally, describe a next-generation stochastic methodology that facilitates explicit integration of uncertainty-bound performance prediction, monitoring, and site characterization.
