Liquid phase adsorption is more complex than gas adsorption due to the interactions thatarise inside the multi-component liquid solution.~(1,2) Besides the expected/desired adsorbate-adsorbent interactions, the solvent also plays an important role in establishing the degree of retention. In other words, adsorption capacity can be dominated by the selectivity and thus the preferential adsorption of the targeted probe may be significantly suppressed bycompetitive retention of a second component.~(1-7) This is particularly remarkable in diluted solutions (i.e, low surface coverage) where the solvent concentration is very high, being noteworthy the solvent-adsorbent interactions. Thus, a 3-way approach covering adsorbate-adsorbent, adsorbate-solvent and the likely competitive adsorbent-solvent interactions must be considered.
