A novel Eu complex has been synthesized and very strong light emission was observed under ultraviolet irradiation. Fluorescence analysis showed that the full width of half maximum (FWHM) of the emission peak was as narrow as 10 nm. The complex was embedded into nanocrystalline TiO2 films in order to obtain higher color purity emission. Due to the interaction between the complex and TiO2 film, the excitation wavelength shifts from UV for complex powder to visible for complex embedding into TiO2 film. Monochromatic emission was detected. The quench of 5D0→7F1 transition of Eu ions is due to high frequency vibration of hydroxyl existed in TiO2.
