Structural Behaviour of Joints for Precast Concrete Segmental Box Girders

Precast segmental box girders are typically used to build concrete bridge structures. In this case, the most critical aspects to be considered for this structure are the shear and flexural behaviours of the joints connecting the segments. In this paper, newly proposed joint details were examined experimentally with respect to shear capacity and ductility. Mortar grout-filled spliced sleeves were adopted as the joint system in precast segments. The surfaces of the joints were covered with a coat of epoxy. After application of the epoxy, the segmental girder was completely attached by post-tensioning or steel rods. The segmental girder was post-tensioned with a jacking force of 130.1kN per each tendon. The shear keys, sleeve, steel rod and post-tensioning were taken into account as parameters. The experimental results showed that the maximum load of the Splice sleeve + Shear key + Post-tension (SGSP) model was approximately 16% less than that of the Monolithic Girder (MG) model. The newly proposed joints can also be applied to other types of concrete members.
