A series of laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the interaction of waves with a vertical wave barrier when the waves strike the barrier at an oblique angle. Previous literature has conflicting guidance on how the wave transmission past the bather, and the wave forces on the barrier, vary as a function of the oblique wave angle. Basic tests were performed with regular waves having incident wave angles ranging from 0° (wave crest is parallel to the barrier giving head-on or direct wave attack) to 90° (wave crest is perpendicular to the barrier). Results show that wave forces diminish with increasing wave angle, but that wave transmission is harder to define owing to the combined effects of wave transmission and wave diffraction.
