Repair cost of rubble mound breakwaters over their designed lifetime is estimated. The repair cost is composed of the cost for repairing breakwater bodies and the cost equivalent to the amount of damage to coastal zone behind the breakwater. In this study, the rubble mound breakwaters are repaired when the wave absorbing function is reduced below the properly determined criteria. The authors show that the optimum repair criterion at which the total repair cost is minimized can be estimated by the proposed procedure.
