A variety of order release mechanims have been developed for workload control. While previous research has pointed out strengths and weaknesses of each mechanim, the choice of the appropriate 'way' for the release of orders to the shop floor remains an open issue. In this paper, the effectiveness of workload based order release mechanims, in a job shop environment, is assessed from the point of view of its robusteness when facing changes in manufacturing environmental conditions. A plan of experiments based on the Taguchi method was performed. Simulation results indicate that the order release mechanisms performance seems to be more sensitive to the operating parameters setting than to the order release strategies adopted.
