This paper discusses about a project undertaken on design and development of an eco-friendly automatic gearbox for automobile applications. This is a development, which defers from the conventional automatic transmission for automobiles. Naturally occurring forces such as axial force from helical gears and centrifugal force from rotating mass are effectively and efficiently utilized in obtaining automatic transmission. The basic design consists of a planetary gear train, multiplate clutch pack and eight masses over the circumference of clutch pack. This design is meant for two speeds and complete assembly is considered as one module. The operation of gear shift is very simple. The input drive is always an annulus gear and the output drive is from the carrier in the planetary gear train. At lower speeds, the required reduction is obtained by the planetary gear train. At this position, the multiplate clutch pack between ring gear and planet carrier is in the disengaged position and sun gear is held. As the speed increases, the centrifugal force due to rotating mass engages the clutch and drive becomes direct. At this point the sun gear is freed to rotate.
