FORMULATION OF TWO-PART ELASTOMER SYSTEMS: FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE

Polyaddition based silicone elastomer systems are extremely versatile products, widely used in industrial and consumer applications. Their performances depend mainly on the design of the right formulation to achieve the best compromise between all required properties. The aim of this presentation will be : 1. first, to define the molecular "meccano" and its role in the formation of the network, 2. secondly, to present the main properties required for this range of elastomers, 3. lastly, we will point out the relationships between the chemical network and the properties of the cured elastomer. This last study on the structure-properties relationships was done to identify the key structural parameters on the polymer network formation and to quantify their influence. It clearly appears that the crosslinker or extender molecular structures and the H/Vi ratio have the strongest effects on mechanical properties of polyaddition systems. We will discuss these results and their use to better control the elastomer performances in relation with the targeted application.
