Microbially induced corrosion is a worldwide problem for recirculating cooling water systems. The growth and survival of microorganisms in the nutritional environment of recirculating systems results in the formation of biofilm; ultimately biofouling generates a problem of microbially induced corrosion. This paper brings in to focus the problems created by nitrifying bacteria like nitrosomonas, nitrococcus, nitrobacter, etc., in open recirculating cooling water systems & explains how it can be controlled by the proper application of oxidising and non-oxidising biocides and online monitoring of oxidation reduction potential.
