A collection of 33 isolates of actinomycetes obtained from environmental samples was studied for several enzymatic activities. in vitro antagonism assay against Fusarium oxysporum and Alternaria alternata was also tested. 27.3% of the isolates were able to solubilize tri-calcium phosphate or di-basic calcium phosphate, 72.7% showed cellulolytic activity, 69.7% of the isolates were oxalotrophic, 21.2% degraded colloidal chitin and 48.5% of the actinomycetes showed in vitro antagonistic activity. The 17 most active isolates were selected and phylogenetically identified on the basis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence with different species of Streptomyces, Amycolatopsis and Lentzea genera. In addition, one isolate could be assigned to a new species of Streptomyces genus, and another two could be identified as two strains of a new species of Amycolatopsis.
