Complex recovery of adenovirus-specific cd4 memory functions in transplanted children with uncomplicated infection

To get insight into immune parameters associated with protection against acute viral infection, here we analysed adenovirus-specific immune responses in 31 children who received a bone marrow graft and did not evidenced AdV-DNAemia from 1 to 6 months post-transplant (group 1). 27 age-matched healthy children (group 2) and 24 well-being children transplanted more than 1 year before (group 3) were also analysed as reference. Results: in group 1, sequential recovery of adenovirus effector-memory CD4 (IFNgamma-response) and of central memory (IL2 + IFNgamma-response and/or proliferation) were observed from month 1 to 6. At M6, the distribution and intensity levels of these diverse immune responses were similar as those in group 2 and 3. Finally, defective proliferative-responses despite IL2 secretion could be selectively observed in group 1 at the earliest time post-transplant. Further studies are in progress that analyse immune responses in children with AdV-DNAemia and/or AdV-associated disease.
