The JCB Dieselmax LSR engine that powered the successful land speed record vehicle includes a range of technologies that are also being developed to meet the requirements of the future off-highway (Tier 4) emissions legislation. These include a two-stage boosting system, high performance common rail fuel injection system and a low temperature combustion system. This paper describes how this technology is being developed to enable Tier 4 emissions levels to be achieved. Results from Ricardo and JCB advanced engineering programmes are presented and a technology roadmap is defined. The paper focuses on achievement of the Tier 4 interim emissions levels and also outlines a strategy for achieving the challenging Tier 4 final emissions levels.
