To investigate the actual emission potential of homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) a EU4 full-size engine was optimised for vehicle compliant operating conditions. Results from a single cylinder engine with fully variable valve train helped to identify operation strategies and hardware requirements. To reach both, sufficient amount of intake air and high EGR a 2-stage turbo charging system was obstructed. To fulfil dynamic demands transient operation was controlled using cylinder pressure sensors. Despite the great NO{sub}x/soot-advantage HCCI combustion shows strongly increased HC/CO-emissions. HC species fractions were examined by means of mass spectroscopy. To improve HC/CO-after-treatment a pre-turbo-catalyst (PTC) upstream the turbine was tested.
