The paper demonstrates how the concept of model-based specification can be used for the procurement of high-power electronic equipment in power systems. In this approach, a detailed computer model of the network, in which the intended power-electronic equipment will be embedded, is used as a means to specify the desired performance. Experiments with design alternatives implemented in the simulation model replace the major steps used in conventional design procedures that mainly rely on words to describe the desired objectives. An automated optimization procedure that selects the best design is used. The proposed model-based specification approach is demonstrated using the example of a new 200 MW back-to-back high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system embedded in an existing power system.
