The first timbers of the keel of HMS Victory were laid down in 1759 in Chatham Dockyard and she was eventually launched 6 years later in 1765. She saw active duty between 1778 and 1812, a total of 34 years and a period rarely matched by any modern warship. Of course she is best known for being the Flagship of Admiral Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805, the bicentenary of which was celebrated in 2005.
