The anhydride group has been shown to be a very reactive and efficient coupling agent.1 For example, Lin~2 demonstrated enhanced bonding of polypropylene to steel through the peroxide-initiated grafting of maleic anhydride onto the polypropylene chain. This paper presents recent results demonstrating the enhancement of interfacial adhesion in EPDM-based adhesives, sealants and coatings through the addition of maleic anhydride (MAH)-grafted Trilene~R. This adhesion enhancement has been shown on a comprehensive array of substrates. Although this work demonstrates the adhesion enhancement by adding MAH-grafted Trilene~R to EPDM-based adhesives, it is reasonable to suspect that this enhancement might also occur when MAH-grafted Trilene~R is added to other adhesives.
