Polymer molecular structural information needs to include not only molecular weight and molecular weight distribution (MW/MWD) but also chemical composition (CD) and chemical composition distribution (CCD). The MW/MWD characterization is performed by state-of-the-art multiple detector GPC technology. Multiple detector GPC technology also determines polymer chain branching information, including both short chain branching and long chain branching. Combining a CCD capable instrument with GPC allows the collection of two-dimensional structure information. At The Dow Chemical Company, High Temperature GPC (HT-GPC) followed with IR detection has been performed successfully. Three main technologies have been implemented and are currently in use to support Dow’s polyolefin business. These technologies are HT GPC with flow through FT IR cell, HT GPC with a fixed band IR detector, and HT GPC with complete solvent removal technology (DiscovIRTM). The uniqueness and advantages of each technology define their applicability for different polyolefin samples. Accurate polymer MW/MWD and CCD information are obtained by wisely choosing the proper technologies for the problem at hand. Application examples of these three technologies based on polymer structural complexity and thorough characterization of complex polyolefin blends are discussed.
