What Makes a Person Creative

In the early 1970’s Dr Larry Rapucci, a psychologist formerly employed by the Dow Chemical Company to study creative people and the creativity process, was retained by the BF Goodrich Chemical Company R&D center at Avon Lake Ohio to teach creativity laboratories. His basic thesis is that we can use our subconscious minds to help us be more creative since the subconscious mind works around the clock even while we are sleeping. The key is to stimulate our subconscious mind to work on job related projects. To be successful at this requires four things: 1. Insist on working on important and interesting projects. The subconscious works on our most important issues so make that issue work related. 2. Have project related expertise. If the subconscious mind does not have the necessary data it can not solve the problem for you. 3. Have an open mind. You probably need new data, so you need to accept it freely, without being defensive. Question everything and be willing to be questioned. 4. Be self confident. This drives all three of the above but especially number 1 because it usually requires self confidence to insist on working on interesting projects. Self confidence also allows you to trust your subconscious mind.
