Magnetic polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites reinforced with cobalt nanoparticles with/without the assistance of PP-g-MA as surfactant were fabricated through a facile one-pot bottom-up approach, i.e., thermal decomposition of organo-metallic precursor Co2(CO)8) in polymer-solvent solution condition. This approach includes; first, dissolution of PP or PP /PP-g-MA in refluxing organic solvent; second, injection of metallic precursor Co2(CO)8) into the hot solution to generate in-situ formed magnetic nanoparticles in polymeric matrices. PP served as hosting matrix and PP-g-MA served as surfactant. The morphology of these magnetic nanoparticles was determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Physical properties including room temperature magnetic property, thermal stability, and melting rheological behaviors were investigated in details. The results confirmed that magnetic property, thermal stability, and melt rheological behaviors of PP-Co nanocomposites are corresponding to the differences of the cobalt nanoparticle structures among the polymer matrices, which can be manipulated by addition of PP-g-MA with different molecular weights.
