In addition to antioxidants and light stabilizers, there are a wide range of other additives used in polyolefin formulations. These include, amongst others: low melting, non-melting, hygroscopic, dusty, and difficult to disperse additives. Individually and collectively, these additives can cause issues during compounding, including: inaccurate dosing, physical loss of the additive, sticking in the hopper, dusty, unsafe working conditions, increased changeover times, clumping, poor dispersion, and segregation of additives. In such cases, additive preblends can often improve the situation, but care must be taken to insure proper stability (thermal stability, homogeneity and abrasion resistance) of the preblend during handling, transport, and storage.
