High Performance Minerals for Polyolefin Applications (PPT)

The role of minerals in plastics, primarily polyolefins, has been continuously evolving in the past few decades into functional polymer modifiers, which deliver a wide range of functions from reinforcement, enhanced thermal and mechanical properties and film antiblocking to crystal and foam nucleation, sound damping, and liquid/gas barrier properties. These functions are essential for many high performing polyolefin compounds, whose application span would considerably shrink without using minerals. This presentation starts with a brief review of many functions of minerals in polyolefin compounds, then concentrate on a number of highest performing mineral products that Imerys offers for polyolefin applications, including diatomaceous earth for antiblocking, Microcel~R calcium silicates as liquid carrier for compounding, ultrafine Jetfine ~R talc products for optimum stiffness to toughness balance primarily for automotive applications, high aspect ratio HAR~R talc products for maximum stiffness and light-weighting through down-gauging, high aspect ratio Suzorite ~R mica products to maximize reinforcement in plastics, plus two developmental talc products: a coated ultrafine talc for improved scratch resistance of high impact PP and TPO compounds, and a microcrystalline talc product developed for best performance in plastic foams including expanded PP and TPOs.
