Functionally graded WC-Co materials can be manufactured by controlling liquid phase migration or liquid Co redistribution during liquid phase sintering. The driving force of liquid phase migration is migration pressure, which depends on the WC grain size, the volume fraction of liquid Co and the carbon content. The dependence of migration pressure on WC grain size and liquid Co volume fraction has been reported previously. In this study, the effect of carbon content was obtained experimentally, so that the dependence of migration pressure as a function of the above three factors was quantitatively established, enabling the design of Co gradient via controlling carbon content and WC grain size.
