The direct injection passenger car diesel engine has reached a very high level of market acceptance due to it's superior fuel economy, fun to drive characteristics, legislative emission compliance with justifiable cost at a high level of endurance and reliability. The forthcoming worldwide extreme severe legislative limits for emissions and fuel consumption (CO{sub}2) force high level development efforts to cope with the target levels without affecting competitiveness to other drive units. The paper describes the engine measures to achieve very low NO{sub}x-engine out emissions at competitive fuel consumption levels. The effect of intake oxygen content and combustion quality - influenced by fuel injection, boosting, EGR and charge condition is discussed and achievable NO{sub}x levels are presented. It is evident that the Hybrid will also make it's way into the diesel passenger car community. Consequently the levels of hybridization and related operation strategy effects on power unit emissions and fuel consumption are presented. The primary role to make the best out of a diesel hybrid plays the control and operation strategy. Examples for both combustion and hybrid control and their interactions are presented and discussed. From the data presented it can be stated that the diesel hybrid represents a solution for excellent fuel consumption, fun to drive and lowest emissions.
