A diverse set of user requirements has lead to the development of multiple network technologies optimized for process industries. Technologies such as FOUNDATION(tm) Fieldbus provide single loop integrity through distributed function block applications and enable control in the field. Emerging wireless sensor networks such Wireless HART and ISA100 provide opportunities for reduced cost remote monitoring. However, true operational excellence can only be achieved when each of these networking technologies are seamlessly integrated into a common automation infrastructure based on open standards. This automation infrastructure must integrate both fieldbus and remote 10 network topologies and scale from small to large installations. It must be applicable to both greenfield and brownfield projects. The Fieldbus Foundation continues to open the process automation system through collaboration with other industry groups such as Profibus Nutzerorganisation, HART Communication Foundation, NAMUR, OPC Foundation and ISA. Recent initiatives such as the HSE Wireless Backhaul and Remote 10 projects extend the Foundation's object oriented approach to integrate both wired and wireless technologies into a common automation infrastructure. Electronic Device Description Language (EDDL) and the emerging Field Device Integration (FDI) promote improved asset lifecycle management through common engineering tools. Adopting diagnostics standards conforming to NAMUR NE107 provides a common diagnostic view across all devices, enabling efficient asset optimization.
