Preparation of Thin Graded YSZ Layers via Sol-gel Route

Nano-scaled YSZ films are promising candidates for high performance electrolytes in solid oxide fuel cells operating at intermediate temperatures. In this work a combination of polymeric and colloidal sol techniques has been investigated to fabricate electrolyte layers on warm-press as well tape-cast anode substrates. In order to apply ultra thin films, a graded layer configuration is necessary. Colloidal sols have been used for preparation of intermediate layers on which the top layer with thickness of 50-300 nm could be applied by coating polymeric sol. The overall thickness of the YSZ layers is able to be reduced to 1-3 μm. Different sols, sol-gel derived powders and layers were characterized by particle size analysis, rheometry, XRD, N2 adsorption experiment, dilatometry, SEM and helium leak- test.^
