Development of Proton Conductor-Based Reversible SOFCs

The anode supported button type single cells for reversible SOFCs comprising of BSCF (Ba_(0.5)Sr_(0.5)Co_(0.8)Fe_(0.2)O_(3-δ)), LSCM (La_(0.8)Sr_(0.2)Cr_(0.5)Mn_(0.5)O_(3-δ)), and PSN (Pr_(1.4)Sr_(0.6)Ni_(10)O_(4+δ)) cathodes // BCZY (10-15 μm) // NiO-BCZY have been fabricated by wet colloidal spray and co-firing for investigating the compatibility and stability of candidate cathodes on barium cerate based electrolytes. The electrochemical performance and durability of single cells were characterized at the temperature 600-700 °C under fuel cell and electrolysis modes. The area specific resistance of an anode supported button cell of BSCF // BCZY // NiO-BCZY in fuel cell mode was about _(0.2)6 Ω·cm~2 and in the electrolysis mode was 0.46 Ω·cm~2 at 600 °C, indicating an efficient reversible SOFC. The measured hydrogen evolution rate at the fuel electrode under the current density 1050 mA·cm~(-2) at 600 °C was 7.1 ccmin~(-1) ·cm~(-2), resulting in a current efficiency of around 97% to produce hydrogen.^
