In this chapter we review the development of the theoretical models for analyzing the performance of microstructured, air-breathing fuel cells for portable devices. The ever increasing power density demands of portable consumer electronics are driving the integration of fuel cells into portable devices. The widespread integration of fuel cells into portable devices is expected to occur before automotive fuel cell systems are widely adopted. The market for portable electronics is much more accessible to fuel cells than automotive applications because of the higher cost tolerance at this scale, as much as two orders of magnitude higher.
