TRANSITION TO IWRM IN LOWLANDS OF THE AMU DARYA AND THE SYR DARYA RIVERS

The integrated water resources management (IWRM) is becoming popular and gradually implementing in water sector in Central Asia. After successful completion of the IWRM-Fergana Project in the Fergana Valley area within the boundaries of three pilot systems in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, a new phase of extending the gained experience to other areas having the conditions similar to the Fergana Valley was initiated. The proposed IWRM implementation in the lowlands of the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya rivers requires taking into account socioeconomic and environmental specificities of this zone and the transboundary component of the region. Maintaining equality and sustainability of water allocation at transboundary basin level would guarantee adherence to IWRM at national level. The presentation describes the suggested IWRM mechanisms and tools for given conditions.
