Development of a particle counter for bioaerosol measurement

More recently, influences of bioaerosols to global environment have been suggested from a viewpoint of long-range transport of bacteria and fungi that those could influence cloud process and indirect radiative effect, and also might affect to microbial habitat and/or disease in human, plants and animals. However, there is little information of distribution and number concentration of bioaerosols. Investigating of the bioaerosol concentration is strongly desired to understand bioaerosol diffusion in the troposphere. To observe the number concentration of atmospheric bioaerosols, we are developing a particle counter for bioaerosol measurement, which applies characteristics of intrinsic fluorophores of biogenic molecules. A prototype of the particle counter could count only the fluorescent light from fluorescent polystyrene latex particles through a filter cut light of the range below scattered wavelength. In this study, we introduce the developing instruments that can count fluorescent particles, and the perspective to apply the instrument to the field observation.
