There are many different situations for the application of underwater wet welding. Offshore structural repairs are by far the most prevalent application of wet welding. Materials encountered offshore are carbon manganese structural steels. These repairs may arise due to corrosion, storm loads, vessel impacts, fatigue or installation mishaps. Other applications include modifications to existing structures due to a change in its operational requirements. For example, adding control umbilical I-tubes, produced water disposal caissons, installing additional pad eyes for steel catenary riser (SCR) pull-ins, and water intake sumps to tension leg platform (TLP) or semi-submersible production platforms, where no provision for attachment for these appurtenances has been provided.
